AutoMotorPlex hosted an evening with a panel of classic car experts, including Wayne Carini of the television show “Chasing Classic Cars,” Colin Comer of Colin’s Classic Cars in Milwaukee, and Dave Kinney, the publisher of Hagerty’s Price Guide. The panel was hosted by Jonathan Stein from Hagerty Insurance.

They discussed trends in classic car ownership by showcasing six vehicles that collectors should be watching – and owning.

The list the panel compiled struck a chord with the crowd, including our own garage condo owners. The list included the 1963 Studebaker Avanti R2, 1961-67 Jaguar E-Type Coupe, 1970-71 Datsun 240Z, 1967-71 Ford Bronco, and the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 SRT pickup.

While discussing these vehicles, the panel dropped a few bombshells along the way. One was that older pickup trucks are getting higher values and are being collected on a greater basis.

The other bombshell is something that is becoming a trend in the classic world. The panel said to watch certain Japanese automobiles from the 1970s through the 1990s. We asked the panel members and the Hagerty folks for specifics. He pointed that the 1994-96 Toyota Supra will become collectible and see their values rise, Mazda RX-7s and Miatas may end up being flattened out in the marketplace due to a larger supply of them.

Even though many questions were fielded by the panel, there was one takeaway that they wanted to convey to the audience. In the end, these classic cars were meant to be driven. They also need to be passed on to the next generation. The latter part is important given some trends among generations where there have been resistance in the handing down of classic cars to their heirs. Instead, Carini, Comer, and Kinney encouraged both education and stewardship of classic cars for future generations.

One suggestion was made when looking for a new classic automobile. Hagerty has an online tool that calculates the value of a classic vehicle through the Valuation Tools site. You can log on to the site here: hagerty.com/valuationtools
